The consensus utilizes a Directed Acyclic Graph architecture as an intermediary data structure, resulting in a rapid time to finality. In the end, however, Aleph Zero is still a blockchain—not a DAG. The consensus is integrated into Substrate, an open framework built by Parity and the Polkadot developer community. However, this doesn’t make Aleph Zero a parachain but rather an independent Layer 1. In 2024, Aleph Zero introduced <a href="https://zkos.alephzero.org/" rel="noreferrer" target="_blank">zkOS</a>, a software-based privacy layer based on zero-knowledge proofs that serves as a convenient framework that is easy for developers to use. The goal is to make Web3 on-chain privacy infrastructure accessible, user-friendly, and economically advantageous. Additionally, in 2024, Aleph Zero will deploy an EVM-powered Layer 2 upon the Ethereum blockchain to provide even more options for developers wishing to take advantage of the network's unique privacy features.With the above, Aleph Zero aims to solve the shortcomings of DLT base layers and to help the industry tackle the problem known as the Blockchain Trilemma.
